VeteranCemetery_iStock_000004553852XSmall_09.jpg

Every Veterans Day presents an opportunity to commemorate those who served in some faraway place long ago, many of whom paid that ultimate sacrifice. World War II offers its share of remembrances: Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941; Normandy, June 6, 1944; the Battle of the Bulge, December 16, 1944; to name a few.

Sadly, however, one series of battles continues to be ignored.

On June 3, 1942, the Japanese bombed Dutch Harbor, located at the Aleutian Islands, west of the Alaskan peninsula. Three days later, they landed on the islands of Kiska and Attu, culminating in the only battles of the war fought in North America. Many of the men there went through hell.

iStock_passportdocument_09XSmall_web.jpg

Wesleyan church leaders participated in adopting a recent resolution of the National Association of Evangelicals Executive Board, calling for immigration reforms based on biblical principles regarding the godly treatment of one's neighbors and strangers.

"NAE's call to action is in harmony with The Wesleyan Church's official position statement on immigration adopted by our 2008 General Conference," said Dr. Jerry Pence, chair of the Board of General Superintendents, which authorized Wesleyan support of the NAE resolution.  "Neither the Wesleyan nor the NAE statement calls for open borders or blanket amnesty for illegal immigrants.  On the contrary, both seek just laws that are justly enforced, with the law of love and mercy being the supreme guide for the conduct of Christian citizens.  While Evangelicals have a variety of political views and public policy preferences related to the ongoing debate about immigration reform in the United States, Wesleyans intentionally choose to take our first cues from the Word of God as the non-negotiable foundation for spreading hope and holiness."
