OKWU Sprinter Claims National Title
Jun. 30, 2009
Oklahoma Wesleyan University junior Edward Johnson won the men's 2009 NCCAA National Outdoor 100m dash at the NCCAA Outdoor National Championship in Marion, Indiana, April 30-May 2. Johnson bettered his preliminary time of 11.15 with a championship time of 10.76 seconds. This is Johnson's 2nd NCCAA title this year.
The road to success has been an arduous one. Johnson qualified for the 2009 NAIA National Indoor Track Meet during a meet at Missouri Southern State University (Joplin). Johnson ran 6.90 seconds in the men's 60m dash and placed second in a race against NCAA Division I & II athletes as well as other NAIA runners. This time also tied him for seventh in the 2009 NAIA 60m rankings and is a new OWU school record.
At NAIA nationals in the beginning of March, Johnson ran the 60 meter dash with times of 6.9 seconds in the first heat and the semifinal. It was just tenths of a second short of qualifying him for the final round. Victory in the 100m dash at the NCCAA National meet made it all worthwhile.
