Highlanders Victorious on Senior Day
Oct. 27, 2009
A day after tying the second-ranked team in the nation, the Houghton College men's soccer team (9-6-2, 6-1-1) relied heavily on the efforts of a pair of seniors to come back from a 1-0 halftime deficit and score a 4-1 victory on senior day over Shawnee State University (OH).
Less than 24 hours after a earning a hard fought draw against No. 2 Rio Grande, the Highlanders took the field against the Bears in a crucial American Mideast Conference match on a cold, windy afternoon. Shawnee State took advantage of the wind in the first half, scoring in the twenty-third minute on a shot from 35 yards out that was caught by the wind and driven into the upper portion of the goal.
After the match, Coach Matthew Webb talked about his team and the importance of the win.
"I was proud of how we stuck with it, in spite of not playing our best soccer, we got the result we needed," he said. "With this win, we guaranteed ourselves a spot in the AMC playoffs and we still have a chance to finish atop the table."
The Highlanders will have seven days to rest before traveling to face rival Roberts Wesleyan College next Saturday in their regular season finale.
