During the 27th General Assembly of the Church of the Nazarene in Orlando (Fla.), Stan Toler, author and senior pastor of Oklahoma City Trinity Church of the Nazarene, accepted the nomination as the 39th General Superintendent of the Church of the Nazarene.
Toler has authored over 70 books, including ReThink Your Life (WPH), which debuted at number twenty-three on the Christian Book Association's Christian Living best-sellers list. Toler describes it as his "defining book." In learning of Toler's election, Wesleyan Publishing House general publisher, Donald D. Cady stated, "We are very pleased for Stan and believe this election reflects the church's confidence in his leadership and Stan's desire for God's direction in his life. We appreciate the wonderful relationship we have developed with Stan over the years and look forward to being a part of his expanded ministry to encourage, equip, and bless pastors and church leaders."
Just four weeks prior, Toler had been elected the new District Superintendent for the Southwest Oklahoma District. In addressing the Assembly, Toler responded to his second nomination by remarking, "I never dreamed I'd be standing on this stage four weeks later . . . I humbly accept this election."
The Board of Superintendents has six seats; each seat is elected at General Assembly to a four-year term. This year, three General Superintendents retired, requiring the open seats to be filled at the 2009 General Assembly. As of the election this week, the Board of Superintendents includes: Stan A. Toler, David W. Graves, Eugenio Duarte, Jerry D. Porter, Jesse C. Middendorf, and J.K. Warrick.
Before serving as pastor of Oklahoma City Trinity Church of the Nazarene, Toler served as senior pastor along with his family, wife Linda and sons Adam and Seth, at both Nashville First Church of the Nazarene (TN) and at Oklahoma City First Church of the Nazarene (OK). Toler also taught seminars for John Maxwell's INJOY Group, a development institute for leaders.
