New students headed to Houghton College will soon benefit from The Houghton Promise, the college’s commitment to affordability, experiential learning and preparing students for lives of global impact.
The Houghton Promise is a pledge to incoming students, an assurance regarding affordability, accountability, acceleration, academic quality and authentic spiritual formation.
Making college more affordable is a priority of The Houghton Promise, including a new IMPACT Scholarship ($2,500 per year, up to $10,000) guaranteed for all new students entering fall 2018, alongside academic and need-based scholarship awards for which they may qualify (up to full tuition).
Having opportunities in front of students upon graduation is an important factor in ensuring their success as alumni. While they have ready access to career and vocational planning resources through the college’s Vocational Opportunities and Career Advising office, Houghton is taking it one step further. A tuition-free bonus year is available to students after they graduate if they find themselves not employed in their field or in graduate school upon completing their degree.
For students looking to finish in less than four years, Houghton offers a personalized learning experience tailored for their unique interests, needs, and goals. Three-year accelerated paths to graduation in most majors launch students into graduate school or the workforce a year early, and allow for significant cost savings.
Experiential learning is a hallmark of Houghton’s academic quality, connecting learning to the real needs of the world and providing students with significant and transformative experiences. Houghton guarantees a global experience, internship, original research project, or senior signature work in every academic program.
The final component of The Houghton Promise is authentic spiritual formation, a cornerstone of a Houghton education. Through consistent opportunities for worship, small groups, prayer, communion, mentoring, and service, students receive life-changing, Christ-centered experiences that cultivate their individual potential.
“Houghton College has always sought to make our high-quality, Christ-centered education available to all students who qualify for admission,” said Ryan Spear, director of admission. “At a time when many families believe they have to choose between quality and reasonable cost, I am proud that Houghton has stepped into the middle and boldly announced that here you will find both.”
