Our 1,000th water well was drilled for the Birch Memorial Wesleyan Secondary School in Makeni, Sierra Leone, serving 2,223 people. In total, WHI has drilled 251 wells in Sierra Leone, 282 wells in Mozambique, 235 wells in Liberia, 158 wells in Zambia and 74 wells in Malawi. As a result of your support, we have been able to provide the population equivalent of Detroit, Michigan, with clean, safe, reliable, year-round water. Thank you!
Since 2004, WHI has worked to drill clean water wells and provide necessary sanitation in some the world’s most impoverished communities. WHI has also worked to train recipients of these wells to repair, operate and maintain these wells for on-going sustainability. In fact, a 2013 internal audit found that 91 percent of the wells WHI drilled in Sierra Leone, Mozambique and Liberia starting in 2005 are still functioning, still producing year-round water, and are still biologically clean.
“World Hope International has long been committed to clean water and sanitation efforts. In fact, we have been drilling wells for over a decade in impoverished countries around the world to help provide people with access to clean water year-round,” explained Keith Norris, WHI director of water and sanitation. “We have strong expertise in boreholes and recently expanded our capacity to drill three to five borehole wells per week in Sierra Leone with our three rigs. We focus on boreholes in Sierra Leone because boreholes are cleaner and provide a more secure source of year-round water over hand-dug wells.”
With more than 1.8 billion people drinking contaminated water it should come as no surprise that dirty water kills more people every year than all forms of violence, including war. In addition, due to the lack of access to clean water, water-related diseases kill 1 out of every 5 children under the age of 5 worldwide. WHI believes that access to clean water helps to sustain and prolong life, prevents the spread of disease, promotes an increased quality of life, and increases time for economic productivity.
