Daily Reading: Hebrews 10:1–9
The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming—not the realities themselves. (Heb. 10:1)
I saw it on the train. A young couple sat with the lady snug against the man who watched out for her as she slept.
As I turned from that couple, I saw an older couple. The woman had her head against his chest, eyes closed peacefully while he made sure his bride was safe. Their scarves matched, and that made me smile. The silent pair had lines in their faces that were giveaways of the full life they had lived.
One couple had just started to seek their route in life, and the other could look back and see the route they had traveled. It humbled me to know this busy world, which cruised by me so quickly, had some good things in it that didn’t change.
Hebrews 10 describes Jesus not only as something steady, but also as the One who fulfilled the past law. The writer also noticed the good that came from that. Like two couples on a train, one from the past and one headed into the future, a hope for the law fulfilled brings true holiness.
The couples I saw on the train showed me that love, whether from the past or traveling into the future, doesn’t change. My Jesus took the past and made it a part of my future.
