But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream! (Amos 5:24)
My dad was always quick to discipline when we misbehaved. I remember there were times that I thought this was harsh—unnecessary. Even so, I listened to whatever he said. I may have grumbled in my head but I was never one for rebellion. And as time went on, I found that he was guiding me out of a motivation of love, to help me be the best version of myself. I can look back now on some of our biggest battles and see them through the lens of love. Whether it was telling me not to throw a tantrum or stand up for myself in a relationship because I deserved better, what seemed harsh was exactly what I needed from him.
When we first read the Scripture from this week, it is very easy to look at the verses through the lens of a harsh reality. Amos definitely did not beat around the bush. God wants righteousness to consume us, to fulfill us. At first, that can feel intense. But there is something more going on there.
My dad probably loves me more than I realize. At the same time, however, my Father loves me much more than I could even comprehend. Just like my dad sometimes used harsh words to guide me, God does that all the more. Because his love is more.
Our heavenly Father loves us deeply.
