Dr. Shirley A. Mullen, president of Houghton College, has been named one of Western New York’s 100 most powerful women.
The annual listing, published by Buffalo Business First, highlights 100 female leaders who are fostering change in their communities and Western New York.
Mullen is recognized, along with other notable women in higher education, including fellow college and university presidents Lorrie Clemo (D’Youville College), Katherine Conway-Turner (Buffalo State College), Virginia Horvath (State University of New York at Fredonia) and Cynthia Zane (Hilbert College). New York State Senator Catharine Young (R-57), who has tirelessly advocated in support of higher education institutions throughout the region in addition to her other accomplishments, is listed among the top five women of influence.
Additionally, Kim Pegula, president and CEO of Pegula Sports and Entertainment and a 1991 Houghton College graduate, is listed as the second most powerful woman in Western New York. Pegula and her husband, Terry, have invested significantly in the resurgence and redevelopment of downtown Buffalo and the surrounding areas. Their $12 million gift to Houghton in 2011 enabled the college to begin construction on the Kerr-Pegula Athletic Complex (KPAC). Since its completion in 2014, the KPAC has become an important economic engine for the region.
Mullen remarks that “It is a privilege to be able to serve Western New York, in the company of these dedicated and accomplished women.”
