The district conference voted this past summer to call upon the members and friends of the district to give themselves to the cause of abolishing human slavery. A total of 27,000,000 people are enslaved worldwide–more than at any other time in history. North Carolina ranks number eight among the 50 states for human trafficking.
The first Wesleyan Methodist Church in the south, Freedom’s Hill, in Snow Camp, NC, was established by Adam Crooks, a pioneer leader in the abolitionist movement in 1847. Crooks built the church on land that now lies within the physical boundaries of the North Carolina East District of The Wesleyan Church. The Freedom‘s Hill church was established to declare the gospel truth of freedom for slave and sinner alike.
Human Trafficking is defined as the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person through the use of force, fraud, or coercion for labor servitude, or sexual exploitation. Human trafficking is the second largest criminal business behind drugs. There are more slaves today than during the transatlantic period.
