Through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death. (Rom. 8:2)
MY CELL PHONE amazed me. From this black, hand-held rectangle I could call or text or even take photos. It was also completely portable, so I could take it anywhere. I thought this was amazing technology! Then came the day I saw my first smartphone. My friend whipped out this slick, glass-screened phone (a small computer, really) and controlled it by touching the screen. Plus, he could use the Internet on it. I was amazed! His phone could do so many more things than mine. My simple cell phone didn’t seem so powerful any longer.
Sin is powerful. It weakened the law. It required God to send His own Son to be a sin offering for us. And daily our sinful nature exerts power over us. It tempts us to give in to sin. It seems we cannot help saying unkind things or thinking impure thoughts.
However, once we experience the transforming power of the Holy Spirit, we are freed from the not-so-powerful-any-longer law of sin and death. Not only did the Spirit of life secure our eternity with Christ. The power of the Holy Spirit also enables us to live day by day victorious over sin’s temptations. The same Holy Spirit, who is powerful enough to save our souls from death, gives us daily power to defeat sin.
Live today in the victory the Spirit makes available over sin.
